Description

The Bongdeok Fortress, located along the Shincheon Stream on the foothills of Daedeoksan Mountain, was built in the shape of a dragon’s head overlooking the city, with oval-shaped walls stretching along the smooth mountain ridges. The fortress is presumed to date back to the late Proto-Three Kingdoms Period (1 AD–4 AD)or early Three Kingdoms Period, based on hard earthen pieces (dating back to the Three Kingdoms Period) excavated from nearby, the earth and rock construction of the walls, and the fact that the fortress is small and located on a hill.

This mountain fortress was not based on natural landforms like the Geomdan Fortress in Oseong, Dalseong, which protected settlements, but rather served as a site for ancient battles or an entrance to the city. The size of the fortress is around 150 m in length, around 50 m in width, and 40 m in circumference.
