Description

Located in #1572 Bongdeokdong, Eunjeoksa is a branch temple of Donghwasa Temple, the ninth head temple (which oversees a gyogu (district)) of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It is located on the Keungol mountainside, 300 m southeast of the Cable Car Platform. The ancient temple, which dates back a thousand years, is known for providing refuge to King Taejo (also known as Taejo Wang Geon), the founder of the Goryeo Dynasty. When the Shilla Dynasty was invaded by Hubaekjae (or Later Baekjae), it asked for help from Taejo of the Goryeo Kingdom. Taejo led his army in the Battle of Gongsan against King Gyeon Hwon of the Hubaekjae but ended up suffering from a crushing defeat.

With his life in danger, Taejo managed to escape with the help of General Shin Sunggyeom. He hid in a small cave in the bamboo forest to the north of Eunjeoksa’s Daeungjeon (main hall), and managed to remain hidden from the guards of King Gyeon Hwon who were pursuing him. When Taejo later became king, he ordered the high priest Yeongdodaesa to construct a temple near the cave that had sheltered him for three days and saved his life. He named the temple “Eunjeoksa (“eun” meaning “to hide,” “jeok” meaning “traces,” and “sa” meaning “temple”). The nearby cave was named, “Eunjeokgul (“gul” meaning “cave”).
