Description

The style of this pagoda suggests that it was built during the Unified Silla period. Originally, it is believed to have been a three-story stone pagoda built on a double-stylobate. The stylobate of the stone pagoda is a combination of various layers of stones, and the corner pillars of the lower part of the body are adorned with embossed carvings. The roof of each story is supported by a five-tiered base, and the dripstone on the upper part of the roof stone is characterized by a gradual slope.

This pagoda also comes with its own legend. A long time ago, there was a king who had no son. Filled with anxiety, his days were restless and nights devoid of sleep. It is said that he built a temple called “Gosansa” in Gosangol, Bongdeok-dong, and prayed there for 100 days. Immediately after the 100 days, a son was born to the king, and a second son was born the following year. Overjoyed, the king is said to have constructed this three-story stone pagoda within the grounds of Gosansa Temple. The Gosansa Temple of the legend is believed to actually be Beopjangsa Temple. During the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, all temples in the area were burnt down, and the stone pagodas were left in ruins. This stone pagoda is said to have been restored when Beopjangsa Temple was constructed on this site in 1961.
