Description |
The construction of the Wood-seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad and the Statues of the Underworld Kings and Judges enshrined in Myeongbujeon (a place in a temple where underworld kings and judges are enshrined) in Seobongsa Temple in Daegu began in March 1665 and was completed in May of the same year. These sculptures were created by nine monks, including Monk Seung Il, according to the temple construction records that were discovered in the daejwa (the seat of Buddha or “Asana” or “Pitha” in Sanskrit) of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad statues. A total of 29 statues were transferred to Seobongsa Temple from their original site in Yongheungsa Temple in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province. Records show that chief sculptor Monk Seung Il created a total of 12 of these pieces from the mid- to the late-17th Century, seven of which are designated and preserved as tangible cultural properties. The textual records in the statues enshrined in Seobongsa have been well maintained, and the statues themselves boast a high degree of completion. The statues are very important to academic research on Monk Seung Il, who was a leading monk sculptor active in the North Gyeongsang Province during the late 17th Century. |
