Description

Nestled in Daedeoksan Mountain, Beopjangsa is a branch temple of Donghwasa Temple, the ninth head temple ((which oversees a gyogu (district)) of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The temple is in Gosangol, which is also where the Apsan Training Area is located. There are no written records detailing the establishment of Beopjangsa, but according to oral tradition, it was established in the late Shilla Dynasty and was once known as “Gosansa.”

During the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, lights were presented as offerings at the Buddhist altar in Beopjangsa. However, during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 (25th year of the reign of King Seonjo) the temple was burned down, and only the three-story stone pagoda remained. After the temple was reconstructed, it was renamed to “Beopjangsa.” The temple’s three-story stone pagoda was restored around 1961. Before its restoration, Beopjangsa was located in Gosansaji. But in 1961, the building of the temple was deemed unauthorized, the temple buildings were dismantled, and the temple was relocated to its current site. The pagoda, which used to be in front of Jonggak, was moved to its current location in 1999.
